Storm damage shuts down St. Louis airport for several days

ST. LOUIS - Reports of more than a dozen tornadoes around the St. Louis area overnight have left major damage around the region - and have shut down the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The storm Friday evening caused several minor injuries at the airport, as people ran for shelter while plated glass shattered around them. A large section of the roof was torn off of the main terminal, and debris was scattered around the runway as planes sat at the gates.

Flights into St. Louis were diverted to other locations, and it's not yet known when Lambert will reopen. Air travelers planning to get to St. Louis will have to go to Kansas City or even Chicago, and then drive. "Nothing's coming in today or tomorrow" at Lambert, said Crane.

There are windows from floor to ceiling on every end of the airport, and 50% of the windows blew out or blew in, causing some minor lacerations to passengers and people waiting in the terminals, said CBS Affiliate KMOV correspondent Maggie Crane.
