German officials have called Facebook's new facial recognition software illegal and want its use stopped,
Johnnes Caspar, Hamburg's data protection official said the facial recognition feature is "a serious violation of people’s rights to determine what is done with their personal data," and that Facebook faces fines of €300,000 ($426,000) if it does not discontinue its use.
He believes it violates European and German data protection law.
